Colts and advanced juniors - club nights

Format

There are 2 groups of players that form this session:

1. The more advanced players from our younger junior club (SBJB).

2. Junior 'colts'.

Both groups receive coaching 7-8pm Mondays. The colts then stay for an extra hour 8-9pm and play doubles with the adults, this is part of our integration and development policy. Juniors progress to 'colt' status on reaching a certain standard as determined by the coaches, and subject to approval by the committee.

Aims and objectives

The overriding aim of the club is to improve technical and tactical badminton skills with appropriate coaching and practices. There will be emphasis on speed, agility and quickness, movement and footwork, but also singles and doubles tactical awareness and court positioning. The sessions will also be fun and enjoyable, and also interactive between the coaches and children, to ensure individual objectives are being met. Players will receive ongoing assessment to monitor improvement. The colts will act as mentors for some of the junior players.

The club will be a link to the county squads as well as West Midlands Performance Centre, and a main focal point for junior badminton in South Birmingham.

Dates and times

The club runs on Mondays at Turves Green Boys School Sports Centre, Turves Green Road, Northfield, B31 4BS using the 4 court hall.

The centre is closed on Bank Holiday Mondays and the last 2 weeks of August. Apart from the usual closed dates over Easter & Christmas, the club runs throughout the year.

Cost

The club operates an advance quarterly block payment of fees. For SBJB juniors the cost for one hour of coaching 7-8pm works out at £2 per session. For the colts (who get to stay for the additional hour to play with the adults 8-9pm) the cost works out at £2.50 per session.

Any missed weeks cannot be redeemed.

Standard/Age range

The predominant age range of the club is 12-17 years. We are looking for players who have played badminton before but are willing to improve their game with targeted, relevant coaching. We will be limiting numbers to ensure quality coaching and maximum court time.

What is provided/what to bring

The club uses Yonex AS30 feather shuttles. You will need to wear shirt/blouse and shorts/skirt. You’ll need to wear ‘court’ shoes with a non-marking sole (usually not black soles).

There are shower and changing facilities available. You will need to bring a drink (preferably water/squash), although drinks and snacks are available to buy from the centre.

Progression to adult club

All colts get to play with the adults 8-9pm after the 7-8pm coaching hour, and on reaching an acceptable standard then progress to the adult club full time, playing 8-10pm.

Other activities

We also organise other badminton related activities. These include friendly matches, tournaments and outings to local badminton events such as the All England Championships held at the National Indoor Arena.

Coaches/organisers

Glen Spencer (Coach Part 2) is the head coach for this club. There will occasionally be assistants coming in to help out. Click here for coach details, all are experienced badminton players.
