South
Birmingham Junior Badminton Club

Welcome to South Birmingham Junior Badminton Club. The club has achieved Badminton
England
‘Premier
Club’ status
(equivalent to sports ‘Clubmark’ status) in recognition of
the way the club runs and the support for it’s members. The club has been going from strength to strength since it started in March 1997, and is the only junior club in the south Birmingham area.
The details are as follows;
Times
The
club runs on Saturdays at 2-4pm (during school term times in the main) using 4
courts at Turves Green Boys School Sports Hall, Turves Green Rd, Northfield,
Birmingham, B31 4BS.
Fees
are payable via block payment in
advance for 12-14 weeks (Payment periods are: Sep-Dec, Jan-Mar & Apr-Jul),
and this works out at less than £4 per session. We have concession arrangement
for siblings, and weekly payments can be made in
exceptional circumstances. However, any missed weeks cannot be redeemed.
Standard/Age
range
Don't
worry if you haven't played much badminton before. We accept boys and girls from
all ethnic backgrounds, and coach all abilities from complete beginner to
budding county players. All are welcome at the club. The predominant age group
is 8-16 years.
Phil
Darlow is the head coach for this club, Phil is Coach Part 2 (Level 3 equiv)
qualified. Allan Ho (Level 2) and Glen Spencer (Coach Part 2) also run the
sessions. There are also assistants that provide invaluable help to the lead
coaches, and most are Level 1 qualified. These are Ramesh Singh, James Darlow,
James Spencer and Ruth Gameson. The coaches are fully affiliated to Badminton
England and are CRB registered (police checked). They also maintain up-to date
Emergency First Aid qualifications. Please ask if you wish to see proof of this.
There
are rackets available to borrow. We always use feather shuttles. You will need
to wear a shirt/blouse and shorts/skirt, please do not wear football tops.
Please bring suitable
footwear, preferably with a non-marking sole (usually not black soles). It is important to bring a bottled drink, these
are allowed in the sports hall. There are shower and changing facilities
available.
If
you wish to bring your own racket, that's OK. If you wish you can buy rackets
from local sports shops, we recommend Maurice Robinson sports at Kings Heath,
Birmingham. However, Phil also has good quality, lightweight carbon graphite rackets
available to buy, please see him for more details. You can also purchase a
discounted T shirt (with logo, club
name and your name). Just ask one of the coaches for more information.
Format
We
are aiming for a club that is friendly, with a strong emphasis on 'fun' and
'enjoyment'. We want you to have a great time, and at the same time learn some
new badminton skills, and become a better player for it. Each Saturday session
will include;
Warm-up routines, re-cap
Coaching
on an aspect of the game
Practise routines
Fun games
Competitions, doubles/singles and team games
Other
activities
We
also organise other badminton related activities. These include friendly matches
with other junior clubs as well as participation in the local league, for those
juniors who have a more 'competitive' nature. There will also be occasional
outings to local badminton events, such as the All England Championships held at
the National Indoor Arena, featuring the worlds best players.
We
take every precaution to minimise the risk of accident or injury. We would
appreciate sensible behaviour both on and off court to minimise the risks.
However, we have in place some liability insurance whilst at the junior club
sessions.
Web site
We
have a club web site at www.cf-bc.co.uk
with further information.
Feedback and further information
The
coaches always appreciate feedback on
the way we do things, whether it's good or bad. We are always open to ideas and
suggestions. That way we will be able to improve the club, and achieve our aim
of a club that is 'fun and enjoyable, yet will improve your badminton skills'.
